Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids that reduce free radicals that preferentially deposit in the macula, a specialized area of the eye that is responsible for central vision. Acting as major filters of high-energy blue light, lutein and zeaxanthin help promote vision health by neutralizing free radicals generated by light exposure, which is key to proper recovery from bright light exposure and maintaining healthy contrast sensitivity.
Lutein and zeaxanthin are also found in neural tissues, including the brain, where they can support normal cognitive function, maintain a positive mood and optimize response to stress. These carotenoids may also play a role in optimizing sleep quality by minimizing difficulty falling asleep and arousal at night.
