He is believed to have been a self-taught artist, drawing inspiration from the work of Willem van de Velde the Elder. He created a variety of nautical scenes, although he favored illustrations of naval battles, which, thanks to his knowledge of ships, were created with extreme precision, demonstrating an in-depth knowledge of their construction and principles of nautical navigation.
