WHAT IS BETAINE AND WHAT ARE ITS NATURAL SOURCES?

Betaine is an organic compound that is a derivative of the amino acid glycine. The name comes from the Latin name of the beet (Latin: Beta vulgaris), which is its main source. Other foods containing betaine include spinach, wheat, wheat bran, wheat germ, wheat bread, shellfish: clams, shrimp.

HOW DOES BETAINE WORK?

Betaine occurs in the human body in plasma following ingestion, as well as endogenous synthesis in the kidneys and liver. Betaine is a natural component of gastric juice. In conjunction with the digestive enzyme pepsin, it breaks down compounds into smaller particles and then participates in the process of absorption.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF BETAINE IN HOMOCYSTEINE REGULATION?

Betaine is a trimethyl derivative of glycine, making it a donor of methyl groups. Homocysteine is a sulfur amino acid, formed in the body by the metabolism of methionine. The accumulation of homocysteine and its excess has been the subject of many scientific studies in recent years, which unequivocally show that excess homocysteine is dangerous due to the increased risk of cardiovascular diseases such as stroke and atherosclerosis, as well as the formation of blood clots.

WHAT IS THE MECHANISM?

Excess homocysteine in the blood can affect less elasticity of blood vessels, and can also lead to damage to the endothelium lining the blood vessels of cells.
