WHAT ARE FREE RADICALS, OXIDATIVE STRESS AND ANTIOXIDATION?
As a result of physiological processes, as well as external factors (e.g., stimulants, certain drugs, UV radiation, pollution), oxygen free radicals are formed in the body. They exhibit destructive effects, leading to damage and malfunction of cellular structures. To counteract the negative effects of their activity in the body, mechanisms have been developed to protect against their excessive formation and to transform already formed free radicals into their inactive derivatives. These mechanisms use chemical compounds both produced inside the body and those supplied, for example, with food. They are called antioxidant mechanisms. An increase in free radicals, in the absence of efficient antioxidant mechanisms, results in oxidative stress (oxygen shock), contributing to the development of many diseases and disorders. Mechanisms leading to cellular damage include their effects on lipids, proteins and DNA. The ultimate consequences of oxygen free radicals in the body's cells are mutations, metabolic dysfunction, and aging. These, in turn, are the cause of the development of inflammatory processes, cancer, and dysfunction of numerous organs.

WHAT ACTION DOES SUPEROXIDE DISMUTASE (SOD) EXHIBIT AND HOW DOES IT COMPARE TO OTHER ANTIOXIDANTS?
SuperOxide Dismutase (SOD) is a cellular enzyme naturally found in the body, primarily in liver cells. It is a key enzyme of the body's antioxidant barrier. Other enzymes with similar effects include catalase, peroxidase and glutathione reductase. Non-enzymatic antioxidants and free radical scavengers, such as uric acid, tocopherols (vitamin E), L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C), glutathione, bilirubin, cysteine and others also have a protective function against free radical damage. The action of various antioxidants is illustrated in the so-called antioxidant pyramid.

TetraSOD® is a patented ingredient containing the dried marine microalgae Tetraselmis chuii, cultured using a patent-protected technology that accumulates 30 times more SOD activity than any other strain of marine phytoplankton currently on the market.
