Vitamin B12 Methylcobalamin dietary supplement is a sublingual tablet formulation containing vitamin B12 in the form of methylcobalamin (100 mcg). The product is recommended for adults as a supplement to the daily diet of vitamin B12.

Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble substance, also called cobalamin, because it contains the metal cobalt in its structure. It is mainly present in animal products: meat, eggs, fish - livers and kidneys contain the most vitamin. Vitamin B12 is important for the proper functioning of our bodies.
Methylcobalamin/MB12 - biochemically active form of B12, very important in the process of methylation. Absorption of B12 from food is conditioned by the good condition of the gastrointestinal tract, especially the stomach.

HOW DID THE DISCOVERY OF VITAMIN B12 COME ABOUT?

Vitamin B12, like other B vitamins, finds its origin in disease. A fatal type of anemia was first described in the 19th century due to an indisposition of the digestive system. The disease took a heavy toll in mortality. George Minot and William Murphy discovered that this fatal anemia could be treated with the supply of large amounts of animal liver. In 1948, the active ingredient in liver was isolated, and it was not until 16 years later that Dorothy Hodgkin succeeded in isolating vitamin B12. During the work on vitamin B12, a Nobel Prize was awarded to the above-mentioned team: Minot, Murphy and Whipple in 1934
for treating anemia with liver. Dorothy Hodgkin also received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1964.

IS VITAMIN B12 JUST TRENDY OR ACTUALLY IMPORTANT?

The first basic symptom of vitamin B12 deficiency may be an abnormal red blood cell formation system. But not only that, today it is very common for vitamin B12 to have a strong "power" over the nervous system, which ensures that our bodies function properly at the level of psychological functions.

WHAT FORMS OF VITAMIN B12 EXIST?

Vitamin B12 is the only vitamin that contains the mineral cobalt in its structure, according to which it was given the name cobalamin. Because of the color of cobalt, vitamin B12 is often called the "red vitamin."
B12 belongs to the group of B vitamins, but refers to a group of compounds that have the properties of vitamin B12. The main forms of cobalamin are:
  • hydroxocobalamin,
  • cyanocobalamin,
  • active methylcobalamin coenzyme,
  • active coenzyme of adenosylcobalamin.

WHY SHOULD VEGANS AND VEGETARIANS SUPPLEMENT B12?

Important sources of vitamin B12 in the diet are zoonotic foods, such as meat, dairy, eggs as well as fish and shellfish. Therefore, it is common for vegans and vegetarians to take care of a non-food supply of vitamin B12. For proper absorption of vitamin B12, a properly functioning Castle's factor is essential. The bioavailability of vitamin B12, in healthy subjects, from fish, mutton and poultry meat was 42%, 56%-89%, 61%-66%, respectively. Compared to meat, absorption from eggs is estimated to be less than 9%. Similarly, bioavailability from algae is negligible.
