Carnitine dietary supplement is a powdered formulation containing a combination of two highly absorbable and active forms of carnitine: carnitine fumarate and acetyl L-carnitine (ALC). The supplement dissolves very well in water and has a pleasant, slightly acidic taste.

Carnitines transport long-chain fatty acids to the mitochondria so that there they can be oxidized ("burned") to produce energy.

Carnitines are substances similar in structure to amino acids; similar but not the same, since they are not used by the body as building blocks for protein formation, as is the case with amino acids.

Highly regarded in terms of bioavailability is acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) in particular, as it is more efficiently absorbed in the small intestine than the other forms and crosses the blood-brain barrier more effectively. To increase the potential of supplementation, it is worth dividing the supply of carnitine into several smaller doses used throughout the day, on an empty stomach.

WHAT IS THE COMBINATION OF FUMARATE AND ACETYL L-CARNITINE?

Fumarate or fumaric acid (like L-carnitine) is found in the body and is an integral part of the Kreb's cycle (the citric acid cycle), one of the links to energy production in our bodies. Acetyl-L-carnitine supports cognitive function and the nervous system. The combination of L-carnitine and fumarate provides dual support for energy production in the mitochondria. In addition, the combination with acetyl-L-carnitine, the most absorbable form of carnitine, gives us a combination of two "potent" forms that work synergistically.

IS IT TRUE THAT CARNITINE IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT FOR VEGANS AND VEGETARIANS?

The name "carnitine" comes from the Latin caro, carni because the compound was originally isolated from meat. Although we can supply ourselves with carnitine through our diet (this is difficult for vegetarians and vegans), the body also produces carnitine endogenously from two amino acids - lysine and methionine - with the help of vitamins C and B6, iron and niacin. The best dietary sources of carnitines are animal products, such as meat, fish, poultry and milk.

DOES CARNITINE INTAKE AFFECT URINE ODOR?

In chemical structure, the carnitine molecule resembles choline. As with choline, carnitines affect the smell of urine, breath and sweat, which can become a bit more... fishy.

DOES THE BODY EXCRETE EXCESS CARNITINES OR ACCUMULATE THEM?

Excess carnitines, if needed, are excreted in the urine through the kidneys. Most - up to 86% of ingested carnitine, is absorbed in the small intestine and enters the bloodstream.
